ΤΟ ΜΟΥΣΕΙΟ
RETHYMNI'S MANSION
The former Mansion House of the renowned Rethumni brothers, formerly owned by Stamatios I. Proinos as well, passed later on to the Kassian family of the Rethimi shipowners. The building probably dates after 1870, around 1840. It is notable for it's open portico made out of marble, which adorns the façade of the first floor: The characteristic Tuscan columns are bridged with straight architraves and arches.
The layout of the façade is reminiscent of the façade of Hadrian's Aqueduct in Athens, a construction imitated by many neoclassical architects in their depicted projects. Inside the building rich painting decoration prevails both on the ground floor and on the first floor. The building is classified as an official monument of art, following the according ministerial decision. During the restoration works of the construction, the original painting decoration that adorned the interior masonry and ceiling of the interior rooms was revealed and restored.
