      • LIFE IN HISTORICAL HERMOUPOLIS

        broken image

The Historical Museum of Ermoupolis is a significant cultural center, created through the generous donation of the Rethymni Brothers' Mansion and the long-standing efforts of the Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Syros. It is housed in a highly valuable neoclassical building from the 19th century, likely designed by the same architect as the Apollo Theater, Petros Sampo. The building was sensitively and carefully restored by the Municipality of Syros-Ermoupolis, co-funded by the NSRF (South Aegean Region), aiming to preserve its elegant decor and maintain the building's form and character.

In its halls, visitors embark on a journey through the history and culture of Ermoupolis. They learn about the importance of this city and its role in shaping the Greek nation and state, come into contact with another era and aesthetic, and discern impressive details and elements. This experience is crafted in a highly comprehensible manner within the rooms of the Rethymni Mansion, using interactive screens, audiovisual content projections, and soundscapes accompanying each room.

Young visitors will be fascinated by the objects and lifestyle of another era. They can play games on the interactive screen and, if organized in groups, participate in the game "Who Stole the Vase" using the museum suitcase.

The cool and pleasant courtyard of the Rethymni Mansion welcomes visitors to rest and reflect on their experience before continuing their tour in the beautiful Vaporia district of Ermoupolis.

The Historical Museum of Ermoupolis is fully accessible for people with disabilities, with an entrance and elevator to all floors. It has a room for events, workshops, presentations, meetings, and screenings, accommodating up to 40 people. Additionally, there is the option for private guided tours for up to 10 people during the evening hours (22:00 – 23:00), ending with a glass of local wine in the courtyard. Tours are also available at other times upon request through the museum's website.

No one should miss the opportunity to experience the visit to Syros' "hidden gem," the Historical Museum of Ermoupolis!

        FORMER RETHYMNI'S MANSION

The current Historical Museum of Hermoupolis, the former Rethymni Mansion , forms in its premises a total experience of understanding city life in Hermoupolis, from the start of its creation to its economic flourishing.

In the district of Vaporia, Rethymni's Mansion opens its gates to narrate the history and evolution of urban life of Hermoupolis, inside a society consisting of a cosmopolitan group of businessmen, art lovers and intellectuals. The Rethymni brothers and the ladies of the Lyceum of Greek Women of Syros were grateful for the donation of the magnificent neoclassical mansion of Rethymni, which embraces a building of a city that has been shaping its spirit for two centuries.
